Frequently asked questions
Which car rental company in Curaçao has the best reviews?
On Google, local companies score far higher than the airport brands. Prins Car Rental has the most reviews (4.9 from 2,686 on Google, 4.9 on Tripadvisor), De Vos 5.0 from 1,547, Smart Wheels 4.7 from 1,225. Avis, Hertz and Thrifty sit around 2.2 to 2.4 on Google. Look at the review count too: a 5.0 from 30 reviews says less than a 4.8 from 1,000.
Can I rent a car in Curaçao with no deposit or without a credit card?
Yes, with some of the local companies. According to reviews, De Vos, Just Drive and Move It among others often ask for no deposit or credit card. The international brands usually put a hold of 500 to 1,000 dollars on your credit card. The table below shows what is known about each company's deposit.
Local company or a big brand at the airport?
Reviews of the airport brands keep raising the same complaints: damage claims at return, deposits refunded late or not at all, insurance added at the desk and long lines. Local companies usually pick you up with a shuttle or deliver the car to your hotel and handle a lot over WhatsApp. Their downside: they book up fast in high season, and the cheapest local outfits sometimes have old cars.
Which side of the road do you drive on in Curaçao?
On the right, like in the US. A regular car gets you everywhere on the island; for the dirt roads to some beaches in the west a higher car or jeep is more comfortable.
Is my driver's license valid in Curaçao?
Yes. Tourists can drive and rent on their home license; an international driving permit is not required. Rental companies often ask for one or two years of driving experience and a credit card in the main driver's name, except the local companies that take no deposit.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Curaçao?
It depends on the company. Enterprise, National and Sixt use 23, Alamo 25. Some local companies, such as Ruseler and Acoya, rent from age 21. If you are younger, ask before you book.
How high is the excess and what does the insurance cover?
An excess of around 400 to 500 dollars is common. Ask whether tires, glass and the underside of the car are covered, because that is where complaints often come from.
What should I do after an accident in Curaçao?
Leave the car where it is, call 9233 (Road Service) or Forensys (+599 9 461 3282) and tell the rental company right away. If you move the car before the damage is recorded, the insurance may refuse to pay.
Is it better to rent at the airport or have the car delivered?
The desks at Hato airport are mostly the international brands. Many local companies are right next to the airport on FD Rooseveltweg and pick you up with a shuttle, or deliver the car to your hotel or rental. Choose your pick-up method in the tool above.
