      Booking through a middleman

      Wise

Useful for moving money to your Curaçao account. The card is hit or miss: withdrawing guilders with chip and PIN at a bank ATM works more often than paying in shops.

      Revolut

Travelers report the Revolut card sometimes worked where Wise was declined. Always carry cash or a backup card.

      JoHo Insurances

Dutch broker for expat and emigration insurance, including Allianz Care, with 10% off the online premium.

      Pacific Prime

Broker that compares quotes from Allianz, April, AXA, Cigna and Bupa for Curaçao.

      MoverDB

Compares container rates and passes quote requests to movers.

      Good to know

      • The Caribbean guilder (XCG) is pegged at 1.79 to the US dollar.
      • Your admission by right lapses if you live abroad for more than a year, and you have to apply again.
      • Admission doesn't give you the right to run a business. Some businesses and director roles need a separate business or director's license.
      • Planning to retire there? Apply to the tax inspector within two months of registering. A missed deadline can't be fixed.
      • On @HOME you can't work for a Curaçao employer. Your employer or clients must be based abroad.
      • You set up a BV (local LLC) through a notary, usually in about two weeks. Profit tax is 15% up to XCG 500,000 and 22% above that.
      • Bring cash or a backup card: cards from digital banks are regularly declined on Curaçao.

      Frequently asked questions

Can Dutch citizens just move to Curaçao?

No. If you weren't born on the islands, you need an admission-by-right declaration from the Admission Office and you must be able to support yourself. As a tourist you can stay six months; to work or stay longer, you apply for the declaration. You can stay on the island while it's pending, and the office decides within four months.

Which law governs admission to Curaçao?

The Landsverordening toelating en uitzetting (LTU), Curaçao's admission and deportation ordinance. It sets who may stay on Curaçao and on what terms, including for Dutch citizens not born on the islands.

What is the @HOME in Curaçao program?

A permit for remote workers of any nationality, for six months and extendable once to a year. It costs ANG 535 (about USD 294), takes about two weeks, and you don't pay Curaçao income tax. Families apply together. It doesn't make you a resident.

How does Curaçao's retiree (penshonado) tax regime work?

If you're 50 or older and didn't live on Curaçao in the previous five years, foreign income such as pensions is taxed at a flat 10%. Conditions: apply within two months of registering, own a home worth at least XCG 450,000 within 18 months that you don't rent out, and don't work or run a business on Curaçao.

What health insurance do I need on Curaçao?

Residents with a permit can be covered by the SVB's basic health insurance (BVZ); workers pay through payroll. Local insurers include Fatum Health (Guardian Group) and ENNIA Caribe Zorg. If you stay under 180 days, you'll need a private plan from insurers like Cigna Global, Allianz Care, Bupa Global, AXA or April. @HOME requires valid medical or travel insurance.

Does my Dutch health insurance still apply after I move?

Usually not. If you deregister and live outside the EU, you cancel your Dutch policy. With a Dutch pension or state pension in a non-treaty country, you lose Dutch-funded care and need an international or local plan.

Can I open a bank account before I live on Curaçao?

Sometimes. MCB has a non-resident account, but asks for a tie to Curaçao, a reference letter, ID, proof of address under three months old and proof of income. You can start online, but you usually finish at a branch. Expect one to three weeks.

How much does it cost to ship a container to Curaçao?

Ocean freight alone for a 20ft container from Rotterdam to Willemstad was about USD 1,936 per MoverDB, or USD 3,276 for a 40ft (mid-2023 rates). From New York, a 20ft ran about USD 2,228. A full-service move in a 20ft container runs €6,000 to €7,500 according to one source. Sharing a container is cheaper.

What does living on Curaçao cost, and what's the tax?

Per Numbeo figures, a one-bedroom in the center runs about USD 807 a month, USD 669 outside the center, and a three-bedroom in the center USD 1,718. Income tax ranges from 9.75% to 46.5%. Residents are taxed on worldwide income; advisers cite 183 days as a marker for tax residency, along with having a home there. Americans still file US returns, and there's no comprehensive US-Curaçao tax treaty.
