Find the right domain name for your business

Turn a business idea into a shortlist you can actually compare. Generate name ideas, see why each one works, then check registration availability without buying anything.

Editorial review · Henkjan de Krijger

For a US business, start by comparing a clear, memorable .com name. Use a meaningful second word if the first choice is taken. Check federal trademark records, broader name use and renewal pricing before registering. A keyword-heavy domain does not guarantee better Google rankings.

How do you choose a domain name for a US business?

Write down the name you would put on a storefront, invoice or podcast introduction. Ask someone to spell it after hearing it once. Check how it looks in an email address and on a phone screen. Prefer a name customers can repeat over one that needs an explanation every time.

Should a US business choose .com, .net or .org?

Compare .com first for a general commercial business and judge alternatives in the context of your audience. An organization may want to consider .org; a software product may consider .app. Availability alone is not a reason to use a confusing extension. Country-code domains have their own rules: .us is not a universal substitute for .com and has eligibility requirements.

What if the .com name you want is already taken?

Try a meaningful modifier, a service word or a genuinely different brand. For a local service, a city can make the purpose clearer, but it can also limit a later expansion. Do not assume an empty website means an unregistered domain. An aftermarket domain may require a separate negotiation and can cost far more than a new registration.

Check more than the introductory registration price

Compare the registration term, standard renewal cost, transfer rules and optional email or hosting charges. Quotes in this tool are in US dollars when the provider returns a numeric price. Missing prices mean unknown, not free. Keep control of the registrant account, enable account security and make a renewal plan before launch.

An available domain is not a trademark clearance

Search the USPTO trademark database, relevant state business records and broader web results for similar names in your field. Federal registration is only part of the picture; this tool does not make a legal determination about your proposed brand. Check the actual name, close spellings and similar sounding alternatives.

Can an exact-match domain improve SEO?

A descriptive name can help a person understand the business. It does not replace useful content, clear navigation or a reputation. Avoid choosing an awkward chain of keywords just because it sounds search-friendly. The scoring tool compares naming properties only; it does not estimate Google rankings, AI citations or commercial success.

Domain name questions, answered

What makes a good domain name for a small business?

A clear name people can pronounce, remember and type correctly. Compare a short list against your customers, trademark research, registration availability and renewal cost.

Do I need a .com domain for a US business?

It is a useful first comparison for a general commercial brand, but it is not a requirement. Choose an extension your audience understands and check any registration restrictions.

Can I register a .us domain?

The .us registry applies a US nexus requirement. Check the current registry policy and whether you qualify before choosing it. This tool does not automatically offer .us as a fallback.

Does a free domain search check trademarks?

No. Registration availability and trademark rights are different questions. Search the USPTO database and broader sources for similar names before using your new brand.

What does the name score measure?

It compares length, digits, hyphens and extension fit using a published rule. It is a shortlist aid, not an SEO score or a business valuation.

Are the availability and prices final?

No. Availability, premium status and prices may change before registration. Confirm the term and renewal quote with the registrar before paying.
